#10 - 3D printing some parts

Before I proceed with printing any of the larger pieces, I wanted to first do some testing to make sure everything would print correctly.
Firstly, I tested the M3 screw and square nut slot dimensions with a small side project. Since my desk was rapidly filling up with various parts and prints as I built this drone, I wanted to expand my table storage by a slight amount, to better use some space under my monitor. I created a small table thing, making sure to include the same M3 and nut clearances as with my drone. Everything printed out well and it looks like this:

Another really important printing issue I wanted to explore would be how well my printer would handle supports and overhangs. Currently, a lot of the parts on the drone have pretty significant overhangs, primarily due to the 3 vertical motors on the drone.

I began with some recommended support settings I found online, including a 0.23mm Top Z distance, 3 top interface layers, and 0.1mm top interface spacing (for a 0.2mm layer height), and used the back tether plate as a test print, as it would use less filament and also had decent sized circular overhang. Using these settings, the print was successful; even the connector housing fit perfectly through, so the 0.1mm gap I gave all the pieces also seems to work.


After testing using one of the thrusters, however, one of the tree supports actually separated from the bed, which was a bit concerning. I addressed this issue by modifying the first layer of the supports to have a higher percentage of infill, which would hopefully improve bed adhesion; and after printing the other side’s thruster, nothing serious went wrong.

With those tests out the way, I should hopefully be able to start printing out the larger pieces and assembling the drone. (after doing more electronics work)
